Plaster Skimming in York
Walls that have seen forty years of woodchip, old artex, or patchy filler rarely come good with another coat of paint. They need skimming. A thin, even layer of finish plaster goes over the existing surface and dries to something flat and smooth enough to decorate straight onto.
We have been skimming walls and ceilings across York for over fifteen years, from terraces in Holgate to newer builds out towards Clifton Moor. Most rooms we skim are done in a day. A whole-house re-skim takes longer, but you would be surprised how quickly a tired room turns into a blank canvas.
When skimming is the right call
Skimming suits a surface that is sound but ugly. Hairline cracks, old textured coatings, blown paint, a wall that has been filled and sanded so many times it looks like a relief map. If the plaster underneath is still stuck firmly to the wall, we skim over it. If it is loose or blown, that is a repair job first, and we will tell you honestly which one you are looking at when we quote.
What we actually do
We prep the surface so the new plaster grips. That usually means a coat of PVA or a bonding agent, and scrim tape over any joints or cracks that could telegraph through. Then two coats of finish plaster, trowelled up as it firms, and a final polish to get it flat. Once it is dry, normally a few days depending on the room and the weather, it takes paint beautifully.
You get one tidy crew, dust sheets down, and the room left clean. No mess walked through the hall.
How much does skimming cost in York
It depends on the size of the room and the state of the walls. A single small room is at the lower end. A full lounge with ceilings, or a whole house, costs more. We quote per job after seeing it, not a vague rate over the phone, and the quote is free.
