Ceiling Plastering in York

Ceilings are the part of a room nobody thinks about until they crack. Then they are all you can see. Whether it is an old lath and plaster ceiling that has started to sag, a tired artex swirl you want gone, or a board that needs a fresh skim, we sort ceilings properly so they stay put.

Ceiling work is the job most people should not try themselves. It is awkward, it is messy, and getting a flat finish above your head takes practice. We have been doing it across York for fifteen years and more, and we bring the kit to do it cleanly.

Old ceilings, and what usually goes wrong

A lot of York homes still have the original lath and plaster ceilings. They look fine until the plaster loses its grip on the laths and starts to bow. Once that happens, patching is a short-term fix at best. The honest answer is often to overboard the ceiling with fresh plasterboard and skim it, which gives you a flat, solid finish that will outlast another round of filler.

If your ceiling is sound but covered in artex, we can skim straight over it or take it back, depending on what is up there.

How we keep it clean

Ceiling plastering throws dust and drips everywhere if you let it. We do not. Floors and furniture get covered, the room gets sealed off from the rest of the house, and we clear up after. You should not be finding plaster splashes on the skirting a week later.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Can you fix just a section of ceiling?

At McHandy, we specialise in York home renovation projects, with a particular focus on York kitchen renovation and York bathroom renovation. Our dedicated team is passionate about transforming spaces into beautiful, functional areas tailored to your lifestyle. • My ceiling has artex. Can you make it flat?

Yes. We either skim over it or remove it. See artex removal in York for the removal route.

  • Is overboarding better than replastering?

On a failing lath and plaster ceiling, usually yes. A new board base gives the skim something solid to sit on. We will explain which your ceiling needs.
