Dry Lining and Plasterboarding in York

Dry lining is how you turn bare studwork, blockwork, or a cold solid wall into a flat, finished surface ready to plaster. Boards go up, joints get taped, and the wall gets skimmed to a finish. It is faster and cleaner than a full sand and cement render, and it is how most modern walls and ceilings get built up. We dry line and plasterboard across York for everything from a single new partition to a full renovation.

What dry lining is good for

Building a new stud partition to split a room. Boarding out a loft conversion or a garage. Lining a cold external wall, sometimes with insulated board to take the chill off. Boarding a ceiling. Closing in after an extension. If a surface needs to go from bare frame or rough wall to paint-ready, dry lining is usually the route.

Boarded, taped, and skimmed

There are two ways to finish boards. Tape and joint, where the joints are filled and feathered without a full skim, which suits some commercial work. Or board and skim, where the whole surface gets a finish coat of plaster for a properly flat, continuous wall. For most homes we board and skim, because it gives the better finish. We will talk you through which suits your job.

Built right behind the surface

A wall is only as good as the frame behind it. Studs at the right centres, noggins where you need fixings, boards staggered and screwed off properly. Get that wrong and you get cracked joints and bouncy walls later. We build the structure right so the finish has something solid to sit on, which matters even more if you are hanging anything heavy or tiling over it.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Can you build a stud wall to divide a room?

At McHandy, we specialise in York home renovation projects, with a particular focus on York kitchen renovation and York bathroom renovation. • Insulated plasterboard for a cold wall, can you fit that?

Usually, yes. Skimming over sound artex is quicker and less disruptive than full removal. We will quote both so you can choose.

  • Tape and joint or full skim?

For homes we usually recommend board and skim for the flattest finish. We will explain the difference and quote what you prefer.
